Pokemon lore
Facts worth knowing about the 1,025 Pokemon in the National Pokedex. Every line on this page is worked out from the Pokedex data rather than remembered, and each one says where it came from, because a fun fact with no source is just a rumor with good timing.
The mascots
The unofficial Pokemon of Rochester, NY
This city's most famous meal is the Garbage Plate. Its most famous export, if we get a vote, should be a walking trash bag. We did not choose Trubbish and Garbodor because of a joke we made up: the Pokedex got there first and files them as the Trash Bag Pokemon and the Trash Heap Pokemon.
Trubbish is #568, a Generation 5 pure Poison type, 0.6m tall and 31.0kg. It evolves into Garbodor, which is 3.2 times its height at 1.9m and puts on 76.3kg getting there. Trubbish has a capture rate of 190 against Garbodor's 60, so the bag is a great deal easier to catch than the heap.
They are two of the 83 Poison type Pokemon in the dex, and two of the 16 that are pure Poison with no second type. Calling them the Pokemon of Rochester, NY is our claim and nobody else's, but we would like it noted that The Pokemon Company named a trash bag and a trash heap, and we named a channel after a plate of garbage, entirely independently.

Type combinations
Of the 154 type combinations across the National Pokedex, 21 belong to exactly one Pokemon. Tyranitar is the only Dark and Rock Pokemon there has ever been.

The most common type
Water is the most crowded type in the dex with 154 Pokemon. The rarest is Ice, with 48.

Cosmoem and Celesteela are tied as the heaviest in the dex at 999.9kg, about 9,999 times the 0.1kg shared by the 5 lightest: Gastly, Haunter, Flabebe, Cosmog and Kartana.

Tallest
Eternatus stands 20.0m. At 0.1m you would need about 200 of the smallest stacked up to match that.

Hardest to catch
76 Pokemon share the lowest capture rate in the dex, 3 out of 255, including Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres. At the other end, 87 sit at the maximum of 255.

Legendaries
71 Pokemon are flagged Legendary and 23 Mythical, which is 9.2% of the 1,025 in the National Pokedex.

19 Pokemon are classed as baby Pokemon, a category that did not exist until breeding arrived in Generation 2.
Source: pokeapi.co, read August 13, 2026The biggest generation
Generation 5 introduced 156 Pokemon, more than any other. Generation 6 added the fewest, at 72.
Source: pokeapi.co, read August 13, 2026The densest Pokemon there is
Cosmoem is 0.1m across and weighs 999.9kg, which is about 1,000 times the density of water. It outweighs Eternatus, the tallest thing in the dex, which stands 20m and is 200 times its height.

Most of them do evolve
117 Pokemon never evolve at all, in either direction, once Legendaries and Mythicals are set aside. Kangaskhan, Pinsir and Tauros have been in that group since the first two generations.

Sandshrew is a Mouse
The dex sorts every Pokemon into a one or two word category, and there are 715 of them. 8 are filed as the Mouse Pokemon, and they are not the 8 you would pick: Rattata, Raticate, Pikachu, Raichu, Sandshrew, Sandslash, Pawmi and Pawmo. The most crowded category of all is Paradox, with 22.

Two types or one
It is almost exactly even. 499 Pokemon have a single type and 526 have two, which is 49% against 51%.
Source: pokeapi.co, read August 13, 2026The rarest color is black
Every Pokemon is filed under one official color. Blue leads with 170 and Black is the rarest at 51, fewer than one in 20.
Source: pokeapi.co, read August 13, 2026Only two names are three letters
Out of 1,025, exactly 2 Pokemon have 3 letter names: Muk and Mew. Nothing has ever had fewer.

Not every Legendary is hard to catch
3 of the Legendaries carry a capture rate of 255, the easiest in the game: Necrozma, Eternatus and Terapagos. They are story catches rather than hunts. The hardest in the dex sit at 3 out of the same 255.
